Hello,
I'm running Windows Xp on a Compaq laptop. Problem I'm encountering is that as soon as I log on, it logs off automatically. I can't access Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Also I've tried to restore the settings that recently worked to no avail. Please help

Have a Windows CD to repair install from ?

or restore to factory settings, and lose your data /

This happens when another program modifies the logon registry key.

To fix this you need another computer on the network or be able to take out the drive and open the .dat file from the user directory on a working computer.

Log on to a networked computer.
Run Regedit.exe
Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Go to File > Connect Remote Registry
Type computer name of the PC with the issue
Navigate to the following location in registry of destination or infected computer

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Change these two values to
Shell=explorer.exe
Userinit = c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Disconnect the remote registry to make sure it's not locked
Exit from Registry
Reboot the PC with the issue, should be able to logon OK.
