I have a Compaq Armada 1700 running Windows 98SE.
For some strange reason the sound icon in the task bar below does not beep when
I adjust the slider (like what it used to do a good week ago). I like hearing
the beep noise when I adjust my volume.

Double click the icon to bring up the full volume control mixer panel and
check that 'PC Speaker' isn't muted or set to zero (if you don't see it then
enable it in the Advanced dialogue).
OTOH have you plugged in external speakers? My notebook will only beep in
this way via the built-in speakers.

Having nothing to do with your computer problem, I have a suggestion...
When posting, mention something about the subject in the Subject line.
Seeing something as generic as "laptop problems" in a laptop newsgroup,
might cause participants to just ignore your post. It's like seeing
a "For Sale" ad in the For Sale section of the paper. See what I mean?
