a while ago my computer i built crashed and it wouldnt allow anything to be installed onto the hard drive.

well i figured i just needed a new hard drive and i finally got around to getting it put in and now its doing the same thing.

when i first start the computer instead of a black screen with the blinking _ in the top left corner the screen is filled with | characters. once windows starts it goes away though. but now im not able to get any internet connection(installed all the drivers off my mobo disc) and when i try and install my video card drivers the computer crashes.

i thought it was the hard drive but it obviously isnt. any ideas?

You described what probably is a video card issue (or bad power to the video card). Haver you tried a different video card? Can you provide info about your system?

ill try to hook up a different cord to my video card and see how it goes after i get home from work. i only have the one right now so cant really try a different one.

antec earthwatts 650w

do you have a speaker hooked up to your motherboard to hear if there's a beep code helping narrow down the problem?

no...dont even know what a beep code is lol...

i tried installing some single player games on it and they installed everything but directX so i think it might be the videocard...but that still doesnt explain the lack of internet connection does it?
