DVD-R not recognized

I wanted to burn movies I downloaded from the web but the burner program I'm using doesn't recognize disc. I have a Dell Latitude D610 with an DVD-ROM DV28EV drive, and am using JVC DVD-R 4.7 GB/Go 120min./mn 1-16x version 2.1/16x blank discs. The burner program is AVS. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
