Laptop external monitor

Hello,
My laptop external monitor shows the laptop's background but not any of the icons. I can move the icons to the external monitor but the programs still operate on the laptop display.

ok sounds like you have extended to desktop accross the 2 screens so what it is doing is what it should do, as to the programs starting screen some video driver software lets you set a default screen for programs to open on but most of the time they open on the screen you closed them on. so the first time you open a program after adding new screen it opens on screen 1 move it to screen 2 and close it next time it will open on screen 2
