Hi, newbie here! :-)

I'm sure this question's been asked many times before. For the record, I
did the Google thing (group search) and the results I kept getting on
this subject weren't really of much help.

So here it is: any opinions/facts as to who makes the best DVD/CD-RW
drives for laptops? I've seen a few on eBay, including what looks like
IBM OE units (these are not exactly what you'd call cheap). I've also
seen others from Sony (I think) and a few other "no-namers" (selling at
comparatively cheap "new" prices). Being a firm believer in the motto
"you get what you pay for," I'm wondering if I should invest in the more
expensive IBM unit, even if it's used, or a cheaper unit (from a
reputable make). Thoughts?

What I'm looking for is a drive which is above all reliable (the highest
burn/read speeds is not my main concern). I already have a good little
LiteOn burner in my desktop and I've grown accustomed to the
trouble-free operation. I expect lo less from a laptop unit. (I don't
suppose LiteOn caters to the mobile market, do they?)

Anyway, that's it.

Of course, this drive must be able to fit the CD-ROM caddy of the TP-600
series.

TIA.

~EM

I'm very pleased with the Liteon LSC-24082K. AFAIK most laptop CD drives have
similar dimensions, but may have varying front plates. About $70US and up on

Thanks!

I didn't know LiteOn did laptop drives. I'll certainly put it on top of
my list. As for the form factor, I do believe you're right in assuming
that it's a universal fit, and that only the caddy is unique to each
laptop model. As for the differing faceplates, that's to be expected (I
kind of like the white labeling on the LiteOn--very "hey-look-at-me!"-ish.

The Lite-On is a slam dunk for the 600 series Thinkpads, I've got several of
them.

IBM never made an OEM CD burner for the 600 series machines, so don't bother
searching for one.

James

At this point I'm certainly leaning towards the LiteOn, seeing as I've
found a couple of places that sell new ones for around $120-125 CAD.

You might want to reconsider that statement:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dl [...] 57013&rd=1

Certainly seems like OE to me. Probably not made by IBM per se, but
still OE nonetheless.

Cosmetically speaking, it would be my 1st choice, seeing as the lower
bevel of the face plate (door) would match the rest of the laptop.

Still, the seller is pricing himself out of the market. No way would I
pay a ~$70 (CAD) premuim for OE. It's amazing how some eBay sellers are
totally clueless when it comes to current market/pricing conditions.
