For all of those who own this processor and were able to unlock it to four cores, I'd really like to know how much of a difference it really was when flat out gaming and benchmarking. How much of an FPS gain did you get ? Ive read from people who have unlocked this processor and claimed that its not even much of an FPS gain, Maybe 5 or a little more, But then ive read from others saying that its a HUGE improvement. My phenom II x2 doesn't unlock, it seems like 1 or maybe both of the cores are faulty so my PC doesnt boot afterwards. But I was thinking of upgrading to a Phenom II X4. But if the FPS difference is just a little i'll just save that for later. So anyone actually tried this and aren't going by just what ppl say ? Please post how it went thank you.

depends on the game.

if it like multiple cores (crysis or GTA for instance) then the gains are massive.

if you can unlock the cores, then you pretty much have a 955 phenom ii, its the exact same thing. so for others, i wouldnt recomend upgrading until you try core unlocking (since you can potentially get the same performance).

i have a 550, but im waiting on a new MOBO woth ACC so i can try unlocking the other two cores. im hopefull, since mine is from the first batch. i know i guy on overclockers.net who unlocked his first batch 550 AND overclocked to 4.2ghz :O

its all about luck, but the performance gains are substantial so its worth trying.

in your case, id say upgrade to a 955 if ytou have the cash. a quad core is becoming more and more usefull for gaming. and by next year i think 99 percent of game will really see big gains with a 4 core proc.

I just ripped out the ASUS GeForce GTS 250 1GB Out of my machine this morning to ship it out to someone I sold it too. And ordered a Radeon HD 4890, So that will be my card now.

welshmousepk, how would you know if your Phenom 550 is from the first batch ? I think I read somewhere that you can check the # on the 550 box to determine whether its one of the new or old ones is this true ?

yes its true, if you remove your heatsink you can see a batch number printed on the chip. do a quick google search and you should be able to find out which batch it comes from.

from the online numbers it seems the first batch has a 80percent or higher success rate. whereas the second is about 70, and it evens out somewhere at around 50 percent.

those are just rough numbers based on the successes of ppl on oc.net though.
