Thanks for the reply screen does stay black but don,t hear any beeps and don,t see a small speaker in the case so not sure what avenue to take. Most likely try to borrow a card but limited as computer has a small 300 watt power supply.
 
Gulli is right.

The proper question should be:

A bad beep pattern means the POST ran. It was just unsuccessful.

The BIOS can only test the interface between the motherboard and graphics card, not the inner workings. The inner workings will be "tested" on the display by the Mark I eyeball.

I keep an old PCI video card around just for this reason.

Thanks guys for your help. Turns out it was not the video card checked it in another machine and it was ok.
With the video card checking out, decided to check the ram and found a bad stick today as just back to it today.
Gonna hook it back up and see if runs ok now.
