My computer: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/12132708-12133156-12133158-12133158-12133158-81959348-81979614.html

List of Nvidia Cards:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_family.html

That is the computer im using, there have been no changes made to it as of yet. Im looking into buying a new Nvidia graphics card but im not sure which oen to get as im not sure what is compatable... The specifications say i have 1 PCI-e x16 slot (the one currently in use, holding my 8500 GT card that came with the system)

First off, how do i even know what kind of PCI-e slot this is? (1.0,1.0a,1.1,2.0)

Secondly, what card would you all reccomend?

The 9800 GT looks like a good buy for 100$, and its a drastic improvment to my 8500 GT... I really have my eyes set on the GeForce GTX 275, for only 200$ it seems like a great bargain... but i dont know if the upgrade in quality between the two of them really justifies double the cost...

Any card that can run 3D games such as WoW/Lineage 2 and other similar games at full capacity is what im looking for..
Right now im mainly into a game called Dungeon Runners by NC Soft, and i cant keep a solid 60FPS most likely due to the fact my graphics card is horrible (my reasoning for this being that everyone i ask who states they keep a solid 60FPS while playing has a 512MB GFX card, while mine is a measy 256MB, and also when something graphicly tasking comes along like a large group of players or monsters, my FPS drops from 60 to 40, the worst that happens thus far is when i cast a certain spell that shoots animations in all directions, i drop down to 20!)

Wait at least two weeks after ATI makes it's intro with it's DX11 cards and yes it is hard to not upgrade right now for me sitting on a pile of cash.
Here is my 9800gt 1gb and it is good on mid settings on a 16:9 wide screen but I use a vintage crt and the rest of the rig has issues so things are choppy.

I guess not neccesarily, but ive only ever used Nvidia on any computer. Also i dont know much about cards, but from the specs i read, the 9800 GT is a HUGE increase in performance compared to my 8500 GT and only for 100$

Unless you can reccomend a different brand card thats similar/better/cheaper?

The natice resolution of my Computer is 1680x1050 i believe. its a 22" Widescreen

A GTX 260 SP 216 or an HD 4870 will be great for that resolution, the 4870 is less but does not support CUDA or physX but if all you are doing is gaming the lack of CUDA wont affect you a ton, make sure to get the 1GB 4870 as the added ram will help at that resolution. Can you check what PSU you have as well because HP tends to cut it as close as they can and you dont want to overtax a cheap PSU and a 4870 or GTX260 requires a lot of power relative to a 8500GT

How do i check said information? and also do you have an AIM/MSN account so we can exchange information faster? its too tedious to send all this information ove rthe thread like this

open up the case, on a side of the power supply(hopefully the side facing you) you should see a sticker that looks like this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.aspx?CurImage=17-139-006-03.jpg&Image=17-139-006-12.jpg%2c17-139-006-05.jpg%2c17-139-006-11.jpg%2c17-139-006-06.jpg%2c17-139-006-03.jpg%2c17-139-006-07.jpg%2c17-139-006-08.jpg%2c17-139-006-09.jpg%2c17-139-006-10.jpg%2c17-139-006-04.jpg&S7ImageFlag=0&WaterMark=1&Item=N82E16817139006&Depa=1&Description=CORSAIR%20CMPSU-750TX%20750W%20Compatible%20with%20Core%20i7%20Power%20Supply
Please post the power available on the 12 volt rail along with the total power the system is rated for, and make sure you have 2 PCI-E connectors, if you dont you should get a new PSU as those molex to PCI-E adapters are recommended against.

Then i wont even bother checking the power supply as i only have 1 PCI-e x16 slot =/

The PCI-E slot and the power connectors are two different items, the connectors i refered to come from the PSU and plug straight into the GPU to give it extra power, a single 16x slot on the motherboard is all you need to fit the card but you need two connectors to make sure it gets the power it needs to run properly.

Are there other means to check that informaton rather than opening my machine?

i would open the machine to be absolutely sure what one you have in there, it isnt that hard to check. From what google is turning up it seems you only have about 300 watts available which is not sufficient to power a 4870, this PSU is relatively inexpensive and will provide plenty of power, its not very difficult to do a power supply change and its better to have the power than over tax the cheap one HP uses, see the second link for the reason why
