I have an existing network and bought a second switch to expand the network but on connection thro' a patch cord,the expanded network cannot be seen. Does the switch need an IP address?

What kind of switch was it? Normal home switches will pull an IP from the DHCP server. Corporate type switches will need to be programmed with an IP.

Did you verify if a crossover cable is required? Does it have an MDI or MDIX port? Since you didn't provide details about the switch and the device to which it's connected, it is somewhat difficult to answer your question.
