Conputer sound

My computer all of a sudden doesn't have sound. Windows XP. I can't hear any music or anything. How do I correct this problem free of any charges?

Check speakers? Turned on, connected to the PC and on the right port? Sound not muted in control panel? Check device manager to make sure there are no errors in the sound device.
