Reformat a corrupted external hard drive

I have been going back and forth with this external hard drive for months now. Something is wrong with it. I find it under device manager and it shows up but not when I visit my computer. I have taken everything off the drive that I need and I was hoping that reformatting it would give me the ability to use it again. It is 500gb so I don't want to loose the ability to store on it. Does anyone know how to reformat a hard drive that is hidden like that?
