Reformat a corrupted external hard drive

I have been going back and forth with this external hard drive for months now. Something is wrong with it. I find it under device manager and it shows up but not when I visit my computer. I have taken everything off the drive that I need and I was hoping that reformatting it would give me the ability to use it again. It is 500gb so I don't want to loose the ability to store on it. Does anyone know how to reformat a hard drive that is hidden like that?

Boot to the command prompt with your win disk and type format xx or what ever you drive letter is. Make sure you get the right drive.
