it seems my FREECOM hard drive caused the USB port breakdown. Initially the Freecom worked fine and I backed up everyhing, but lately, whenever I tried to use it, the PC shut down and would not start again. All other devices worked o.k. until today, when none of the ports work. Have just tried unplugging etc. as suggested, but still nothing. Any more thoughts?

First, check if the hard drive works on another computer... In any case, I'm assuming there's a power instability on your computer, usually caused by a low-quality PSU.
