which would be better for performance running games. an 8x AGP card or a pcie 16x vid card running at 4x?

Depends what card. If its PCI-E 2.0 then the AGP 8x slot and PCI-E 4x slot actually provide the same total bandwidth so it would really depend on the card and which drivers have less overhead. But if you have to run a PCI-E card in 4x im guessing you dont have a good mother board or processor so the CPU will likely be the bigger bottleneck in running games.
