I hava a HD4850 512MB which i use in 1920x1080 display(recently changed). For gaming in that resolution, i think HD4850 is insufficient. Getting another HD4850 is not an option for me because, then i need to change my current Hybrid SLi(nVidia 8300) board which only have a single PCIe x16 port to a CF supporting one. Other options i thought of was to get HD4850X2 or HD4870... pls help me decide on what's better..

The better option will be to wait until ATI launches its 5XXX series. It will be more powerful than current cards and you will need a powerful card for that reso.

HD4850X2 will do fine. However if you wait until the new cards come out it will likely drive the price of the old cards down a bit. Then you might be able to get the HD4850X2 cheaper.

Have you tried overclocking your setup?

Yup.. Tried 'Auto-Tune' wizard in Catalyst control centre... It is not stable, display crashes sometime...

Try to overclock your cpu through the bios and use the catalyst and overclock manually. Remember small increments.

Well what is your budget?

IMO For that resolution you have to spend a lot of $$.
Seems like adding another 4850 will be the cheapest option.(even if you have to buy a new mobo)

The 4850 will be around 100 and the new motherboard (to get a good one not an el cheapo) will be around a 100 so getting a 4850x2 is around the same price and he won't have to replace the mobo as well.

And you don't have to spend a ton. The 4850x2 performs just barely under then 4870x2.

And in the future, if you need even more performance you can then go buy a new motherboard and do tir-fire with the one you currently have.

IMHO, I would wait till the 22nd, see what the price drops are, and get a 4850x2. Maybe if you can afford it then, a 4870x2 ;). I wouldn't worry about any trifire situation though, you'd get negligable performance increase over an x2, and not worth it if money is an issue for you.

but he already has the other one, it isn't a waste of money. All he would need is a new motherbaord which that is why I said 'in the future'. As in maybe a year from now if he needs a bit more or moves up to a larger screen.

I agree with you. Im just saying for now, I would focus on getting the best performance you can afford now. The biggest problem with the trifire I have is that you have the 512MB 4850, which if you trifired would mean that you would only use 512MB per GPU, losing 1GB of texture memory. Your performance might actually be less than with just the X2. It def would not be worth spending $100 for any performance you MIGHT get.

4850x2 : Loud ,runs hot,Large,
4890: Quieter,cooler,New tech.

I am leaning towards 4890 or GTX 275.

For prices refer to lynx-india

Well the 4850x2 is far more powerful then a 4890 but it is a very loud card.

As I said the 4850x2 is only a hair below the 4970x2 in most benchmarks.

has a different, or I should say "updated" version of the GPU.

Why not just lower your res to 1680x1050?

thank you zipzoomflyhigh. That's what I've been thinking reading through this whole post.
