A question on chipsets...

hey there!
i would like to know something... i read on one of the articles here that G41 chipsets does not support HD and G45 does. now what i want to know is that is being effected by the graphics card i have? i have a graphics card which is capable for 1080p. so if i have the G41 chipset with the HD card, does it makes a difference?
i am asking this because i want to buy a new motherboard and CPU and i need to know about my precious HD... :)

  1. If you install a video card, then you shouldn't care about the onboard video controller. Select the motherboard that best meets your requirements/budget.

Yes. The HD graphics card will work with the G41 chipset.

I know that in the case of the Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L, that the motherboard will automatically sense the presence of a video card and deactivate the onboard graphics controller.
  3. okay tanks you guys.
so if that is the case what is the purpose of a chipset in general?
  4. edit: the wikipedia page was page was too general and i'm looking for something more in-depth. not something too technical yet something to tell me the purpose of it...
