Agreed go with the X3, if you pair it with a decent MSI board you can OC it very easily with just a little switch on the mobo, to more than make up for the 100mhz deficit.

MSI 880GM-E43, AMD 880G, S AM3, PCI-E 2.0, DDR3 1600, SATA 3Gb/s, SATA RAID, mATX, VGA, Unlocked CPU

The extra core is better than the extra 100MHz. There are a decent number of games that can take advantage of more than 2 core, and more are coming out.

I don't mean to nitpick, but if you are going to call yourself AMDGuru2011, then you should know this already.

Best for what?

For everyday or gaming purposes I'd take the X3. For HTPC or similar low power tasks, I'd take the dual core since it is cheaper and uses less power.
