Hi,
can someone suggest which of these 2 video cards is generally better as I'm currently configuring a Dell xps system and not sure which is the better option. The processor will be an Intel i7 950.

thanks....

1.8GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 260

or

1GB DDR3 ATI® Radeon™ HD 4870

GTX260 is 896mb. I don't think they have a 1.8GB version?

The GTX260 and the 4870 performs basically the same. Don't get the i7 950. It's overpriced and you can easily OC a 920 to the same specs

i would wait for the radeon 5XXX series to come out it will make thos cards cheaper and you have more to choose from

Get a core i5 and a 4870... they are cheaper as good as the core i7 and a GTX260

To continue my rambling, get a core i5, you will get the same performances anyway with a single card setup and a core i7.

The 4870 is cheaper and perform as well if not better than a gtx260. Still, my personnal opinion will favor two 4850 in crossfire over a 4870.

thanks for that. Will that same processor performance continue along the lines of encoding and the like. not just with gaming power?

HD 4870 and GTX 260 is pretty much on par in term of performance. get which ever you like or one that you can afford.

wait for HD5000 series is another option. maybe you can't afford it but older gen card may drop in price when its out. if you really need the card right now then just take HD4870 / GTX 260

Outta those two get the cheaper one.

Other deciding factor is whether you want SLI or CF.
