Maxtor basis portable 80gb hdd problem!

Hello,
i have a problem with my Maxtor basis portable hard rive (80 gb).when i plug into a usb port
(2.0)it is recognised in the computer manager and it even shows a usb device connected in the task bar,but it does not show up in my computer.i previously used it in a usb 3.0 socket.please help me with this

If you go into disk management and change the drive letter, does it show up then?

i went into disk management but i dont know how to change drive letters...

If you can see the 80 gig drive in disk management, right click it's bar in the right panel. One of the options should be assign/change the drive letter. Make sure you are on the correct drive when you do this!

when i open the disk management....It says....disk 1;unknown;not initialized........i tried to initialize it but the option is blurred....and the other options are,offline properties and help.....

If there was previously data on there that you want to get back, you do not want to initialize the drive as that will destroy the data on it.

By computer manager, I assume you mean device manager (not disk management). If this is the case, try deleting it from the device manager, then reboot the computer. See if it show up properly then.

If this doesn't work, you may have to look into recovery software such as easus partition recovery.
