Best hard drive testing tools?

Hi,
I have a brand new Western Digital WD20EARS hard drive that I am going to use to store family photos on. I would like to test it to make sure it is healthy before copying over my photos on it.

What's the best tool for checking hard drives?
- WD Data Lifeguard?
- HDTune?

Is it enough to just use one tool or should I run both?

  1. They pretty much do the same thing. Both can do a surface scans to check for bad sectors. Pretty much the same thing as running windows chkdsk with the /r option. In addition, lifeguard and hdtune can read smart values from the drive.
