i am trying to decide which gpu maker i should go with for my next build.

depends a lot on how long down the road your talking about if you want it soon i would say ATI since they are puting out new cards soon if you want it some time in the next 6months or so Nvidia will put out there GTX 300 some time and be more powerfull more then likly then what ATI is puting out now

Which ever one fits your needs best at a given price point, neither one is better than the other in general, it all depends on the needs, budget, and current offerings. To ask this question is just asking to get flaming fan boys going.
