I am trying to help a co-worker whose computer seems to be in need of a new graphics card. The first sign of trouble was a "device driver got stuck in an infinite loop" blue screen warning of "a problem with the device itself or the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly." In addition, vertical lines appeared as the system booted (they went away after Windows wallpaper loaded).
A few of the essential details about the computer:
Dell Dimension E510
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 650 with HyperThreading technology
Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400 MHz (4x256M)
128MB PCI Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X300SE Hyper Memory video card
Chipset: Intel 945G Express
Video: Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (GMA950)
Power supply: 305W (that's three hundred five, not three hundred fifty)
I went to the ATI site and downloaded, then installed, the Catalyst Center with updated drivers. Unfortunately, that wasn't of much help. After just a few minutes online, "VPU Recover has set your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands" would display. I saw a post on this site that suggested removing a specific hotfix for Windows XP (KB952287) as a possible remedy ... no luck with that.
Now the computer boots but the monitor, a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW, is no longer receiving a video signal from the computer.
I'd appreciate a little sound advice in choosing a compatible replacement video card so that we can get the system running again. Please keep in mind that this is a nearly five-year-old computer. Ideally, the owner would like to keep it for another year or two before investing in a new system. The computer is used mainly for productivity (e-mail, word processing, etc.) and occasionally for entertainment ... nothing more strenuous than streaming video and an occasional visit to mlb.com and definitely no gaming.
