I have a 1 TB external western digital hard drive. it was plugged in to my lap top transfering files to the computers hard drive. the computer crashed during the transfer and now when i plug the hard drive in it wast it needs to be formatted. i had over a thousand dollers of songs on the drive. what can i do? ie. recovery software

This works sometimes.

Plug it into a different USB slot. Or a totally different computer. Windows will sometimes lock onto that USB slot and give hell to whatever is plugged into it after a crash.

Don't forget to try a reboot if you haven't yet. Power it all down, unhook the external HDD, boot Windows back up then plug in the external.
