Dell Inspiron 600 Laptop wont recognize new Hard Drive

Installed replacement Hard Drive for previous bad 80M unit on Dell Inspiron Laptop. It's a WD 250 PATA unit with the exact model # as one recommended by Dell and is supposed to work with EIDE interface. BIOS will not recognize any HD but does will see old drive when I put it back in. BIOS is one level down from latest but can't be updated until the system is working again. System will run in Safe Mode but will not start any programs. Tried a second unit on the chance first one was defective. Same result.

If this is an IDE drive did you set the jumper on the new drive to Master?
