Single clot cooler on dual slot card

Ok this may seem like a down right stupid question, but is it possible to buy a single slot cooler to put on a natively dual slot card. I realize that heat is a massive problem circulating around in the case, but my intention is purely inquisitive, I do not plan to do this, I am just curious.

Sure as long as it fits the shim, memory & mounting holes you could even put a low-profile passive cooler on.

It would matter more the other way around where HSF weight or height might be an issue, but as long as it fits you can always put smaller on, essentially that's what happens with the HD4850 vs 4870.
