Compaq nx9010 ram limitations?

I just installed a 1gb pc2700 stick of ram in one of my ram slots. I turn on the laptop, and it does not go anywhere... then i put the stock 256mb stick in with the 1gb, and it only detects the 256mb..... is the 1gb too big for one slot?? please and thank you.

You can install 2 x 512MB modules for a total of 1GB.
