Just finished my new quad core system build 2 weeks ago, and everything went very smoothly. I thought I was in the clear with no hardware problems until just now. The new system suddenly just displayed an all white screen and hung there. When I powered it off, and then powered it back on, it now just cycles between 5 seconds powered on, then 5 seconds powered off, over and over again by itself. I've never seen this before. What do you think is the prime candidate? The power supply, the system board, or another component? Any help is much appreciated.
I would focus on the RAM first. Try each stick of RAM by itself in the first RAM slot.
I tried the RAM and it didn't make any difference. I tried removing all connections and devices to the motherboard except power and the CPU, and when I powered up, the system still cycled up and down like a yo yo. I used a power supply tester on my power supply and it checked out OK, so at this point I think it's either the CPU or the motherboard. I only have about 10 days until my 30 days are up at New Egg where I bought everything, so I am under the gun to get the right component replaced. Do you think it's the CPU or the motherboard? Thanks for your help.
which is actually the home of Gigabyte forum support.
Anyhow, in that thread please read what Lsdmeasap says about the boot loop. Need to clear CMOS "properly", and he says this:
"I have had mixed experiances with my Clear CMOS Button. Once I used it with the system plugged in and just held it in for about a Minute and it worked fine. Other times I had tried this with no luck. A few times I had it work with the PSU Unplugged, and again other times I had to remove the battery and press the button for a minute.
So to be sure you may want/need to try all of the above. You will know when it clears because you will get the CMOS CheckSum error screen. You will see this screen after a Proper CMOS Clear, the screen is black and will say Checksum error with a large box that allows you to choose Last known Good, Optimized defaults, ect.
Sometimes if you are doing the battery ONLY method that can take up to 24hours. Best to either use the button or a Jumper on the Clear CMOS Pins. You may also speed things up by unplugging the PSU and holding in the Case or Board Power Switch to drain remaining power out of the system"
