what will be the consequence if you choose a motherboard and then discover that it is not compatible with the required processor

If a BIOS update doesn't solve the problem, you have wasted your money. And you will need an older, compatible CPU to update the BIOS.

What make/model of mobo are you attempting to pair up with what make/model of proc?

The consequence of the proc not being compatible with the mobo is that the computer will not POST.
