Hi,

My HP Pavilion dv9817cl notebook will not boot with the DVD drive installed. When you physically remove the drive from the computer, it boots into Vista with no problem. When the drive is installed, it also freezes at the Hp splash page (where you have all the f key options). When it freezes at the f key page, none of the f keys work so you can't enter the bios to see if the drive is listed. Has anyone had similar problems, and if so how did you solve it?

Thanks very much!

I had same issue with a friends HP Pavillion laptop. When I powered on his computer it would hang at the bios splash page.

If I removed the DVD drive from the laptop the laptop would boot as per normal.

I updated BIOS from the 2006 to 2010 version.

Restarted laptop with drive in and still same issue.

Rebooted with drive out and works fine.

Purchased a new DVD drive and when installed it and booted laptop again I got the same problem.

My thoughts it can only be the motherboard, seeing as though it hangs at very beginning before the hard drive boots (eg before windows). The DVD doesn't have a cable it has a plug connector so it pushes straight into the motherboard.
