what is the difference between dual core and core 2 duo

The same as the difference between a sticky note and a post-it note. One is the name of the item, and one is the name of a brand that is well known for that item.

Core 2 Duo's are a line of dual core processors from intel. There are many other lines of dual cores however, the Pentium and Celeron D's, dual core celerons and pentiums that are similar to the core 2 duo's, and even a couple of dual core Atoms. AMD also makes dual cores with the Athlon X2, Turion X2, Athlon II X2, and Phenom II x2.

A core 2 duo is a dual core, but a dual core is not necessarily a core 2 duo.
