Maximum temperature for a CPU

I am biulding an automatic fan controller for a CPU as a project.
What is the maimum temperature for a CPU.and at what temperature does the CPU need to be cooled.Where can I place the temperature sensor.What type of sensor is suitable for this purpose.I am using a thermistor.

It depends on the CPU. Notebook CPUs can take up to 90-100C or so, but desktop ones should stay below 70-75.

Is this a school project, something that you think should be done, or just a neat project for you?

I am asking in case you do not realize that you are reinventing the wheel. All of this is built into the motherboard and BIOS.
