how do IR receivers work? How do I choose?

Can I buy this for the receiver and ditch the remote?

i'm not sure what you will use it for, but here is one. it comes with the ir receiver

i'm not sure what software you want to run with it. usually they are good for the media center software in windows. but you would need the xp mce edition or vista homepremium.
