First time build, advice needed

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: 9/1/09 to 9/9/09

BUDGET RANGE: $1300(USD)

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: gaming, surfing the internet, watching movies and all the fun things being a college brings with it. (Yea...my priorities are in order :na: )

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com, microcenter.com, tigerdirect.com

PARTS PREFERENCES: by brand or type: I was originally going to go with an intel2quad system when a few of my friends suggested I try the new i7-920CPU

In "choosing parts" you suggest the intelx58 chipset to go alongside the i7 so I'm assuming that is the best route to take.

I know that ATI is a reliable card so I would prefer it over nvidia.

I wanted to go with a water-cooling unit but am not certain if I should.

A full-tower casing is what I assume I need?

OVERCLOCKING: yes

CROSSFIRE: maybe

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I would like it to run quietly

well right off the top a good water cooling system will cost you $400, mid towers and full towers aren't that much different these days

400 for a decent system that would out perform a good air cooled system the best i7 cooler atm is only like $72

I have nothing with the exception of an external hd with back-up data consisting of word docs and music files...wasn't able to save the OS from the old computer.

$1442 before shipping but still without a keyboard and mouse but a good amd build with similar performance would be less

Not even. A good air cooler like the Core Contact Freezer and the S1283 are under $40.

O_O so glad I came here...I notice that you suggested the 64-bit when at 4gbs of ram or a bit more, is it much wiser to do that or would a 32 still suffice?

For now I am focusing solely on the build for right now, just that someone was nagging me about having an OS

A 32 bit o/s only read 3 gigs of memory.
