Cant change screen resolution windows xp

My screen resolution was fine at 1280x720. I restarted the computer and when it rebooted the screen resolution had gone to minimum. I opened display properties slid the slider to 1280 x 720 clicked apply but it just went straight back to minimum. I have tried following Microsoft trouble shooting which advised me to try finding a new driver for the monitor. Downloaded the latest version but the install wizard said it could not improve on the one installed. Help!!

  1. have you done a system restore to a point before the problem
  2. Yes, this has cured the problem. However I am still concerned as to what caused it in the first place. I did an sfc /scannow and I think that this must have overwritten some files. It is the first time I have used this tool and I am surprised that it made alterations without notifying me.
  3. form the sound of your problem you had some damage to the driver missmached files sfc might have done it hard to say

if the problem coms back try unistalling the driver restart the pc and install from scratch with the latest driver
