Hello,
I have been running a ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe with a AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200 , 2 x 1gb pc6400 OCZ, and a older Nvidia Geforce 7600gt card.

Just wondering:
I am not a gamer, but want "good" but not horribly expensive performance for basic video on the internet, running multiple applications at once like AOL, Roxio creator, word, etc...without delays.

I doesn't necessarily have to be a quad core, unless that is recommended. Just a good build for $600-800.

I've always used ASUS, but don't have to...

Thanks

You say you're not a gamer, so I'm not sure what is wrong with your current system. Seems to me like a 4200 (2.2GHz if I recall), 2GB of ram, and a 7600 GT should be plenty fast for most things. If you want increased performance, I would re-install windows to clean up any crap that's built up over time.

If you just want a little more performance, some cheap upgrades compatible with your motherboard are:

4GB memory kit ($50-$60).
Athlon 64 X2 6000 (3.0GHz, still on newegg for $80) -OR-
Phenom 9650 (quad-core 2.3GHz $110)

Otherwise, you are talking either Athlon II or Phenom II, which will necessitate a newer motherboard, and overall just more cost, which I don't see your needing. I also don't see any reason to upgrade your GPU unless you game.

If you really just want a new computer though, find any good $600-800 computer (like Tom's last Budget gamer), and swap out the more expensive GPU for a cheaper one, and put the extra money into the processor.

If you looking for a far better multi tasker/ non gamer under $500 could get you one based off a DDR3 platform hehe
