I'm not building nor do I have anything in mind, but I'm just curious.

its determined by the graphics card mostly and how many of them you want to run, you can check the TDP of a card to find out approximately how much power it will draw, by combining the TDP of the system you can get a rough estimate but it will be a bit low because not all of the power is turned into heat, also nvidia and intel and AMD rate TDP differently. The power supply calculator that many people recommend gave me some strange answers so i dont really trust it anymore, it has a 4870 using 27 more watts than a 4890 which isnt true.
