Wep key comes up incorrect although it is the correct wep

Hello,
Can someone please help me. I was inserting a WEP key on my new computer and it came up limited or no connectivity. So i retried with the correct wep which was being used on another pc and it came up with the error that it does not have the correct characters. It says that it needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on network configuration. Can someone help?
