Didn't you think that the single 5870 1GB would beat the GTX 295

well i thought it would beat the gtx 295,but it has less performance than it.what i wanna know did you expect that it would beat the gtx 295 or you were expecting that it wouldn't?

When looking at the benchmarks it's now pretty clear that the huge lead two gpu's have is almost impossible to overcome with one gpu, even next gen. The gtx295 has 2.8 billion transistors compared to 'only' 2.1 billion on the 5870. The drivers got an awful lot better for both sli and crossfire too.

I expect that the 5870 will be the faster card than the gtx295 in all dx11 games however, and I would also expect Catalyst 10 to give the 5870 an edge.

Although the raw speed is somewhat disappointing in light of AMD's own benchmarks, eyefinity is what really matters, at least to me.

The 5870 generally is the same or faster than the GTX 295. The GTX 295 is a dual GPU card and the 5870 is a single GPU card, you have to keep that in mind. They will give the same gaming experience and perform basically the same, but the 5870 won't have those maximum FPS spikes that a dual GPU would so it doesn't look quite as good in reviews. The 5870 does about what I expected, it matches the GTX 295 on launch and will gain some performance in the coming months.

Considering it's the first, factory-clocked, single GPU version, I think it's pretty impressive that it is even competing with the dual GPU gtx295. The 4890 and 4870x2 are gonna be pretty damn awesome!
Eyefinity and DirectCompute11 are what I'm looking forward to. My CPU leaves something to be desired so if my new 58xx card can help it out with DirectCompute11.. Wehey!

Also whilst I'm here, any idea when catalyst 10 will be out?

yeah, except it now seems you will still need at least 2x 5870 to run 3 1920x1200 screens in quite a few games...

all the demos led us to believe one 5870 could easy handle Crysis and other games on a 3 screen setup easy.

Will be interesting to see some triple screen benchies - were not in any reviews I have read so far.

A slight shame, but am still damn impressed with it :)

The crysis eyefinity was done on cryengine 3 with unknown cards. I'm guessing at least two 5870's however.

Looking at some of the others, like left4dead is awesome, the new batman looks fantastic too. It's a new technology that can only get better. What is so amazing about it for me is just how good it is already, sure it has issues with some games but it would have been a miracle if it didn't have any.
