I plan on ordering this LCD monitor for my rig:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] Tpk=W2043T

According to the specs, it says 'Recommended resolution 1600x900'.

Does it mean I have to set game resolution to 1600x900 for it to have a longer life?

No it just means that it works best at that resolution, it will run at other resolutions but that one will give you the best quality image with the fewest visual distortions, if you attempt to run a different aspect ratio on it it will skew the world. Always try to run a monitor at the native resolution or at the same aspect ratio if you have to reduce the resolution.
