OK, I've gotten my new i5-2500K up and running, even upgraded to SLI, so now I am thinking, perhaps, to look into NAS.

I have my rig, my wife's (i5-750K), and my son's (going to using my old Core2Duo) on the network, along with an iPhone, an iPad, and we have a few iPod's as well.

Would NAS be a good idea? I am not opposed to buying a pair of drives and putting it together (I currently own 4 Samsung F3's, as they seem quite fast), but I really would like a good understanding of how they work and what is the best, cost effective, way to go about this.

My goal is to have a good central place to store data (music, movies, and photos), as we take a lot of digital photos and I just bought a HD Camcorder, and I don't want to eat up the space on my mechanical drives with all the movies and photos.

Also, can the NAS be used as a back-up as well as storage for these media files?

Thank you.

Yes, NAS can do all that and It won't take much power CPU and electrical to do

1st Option built a WHS - this can expand up to 40 drives if you have a PCI express 8x/16 lanes or more (mix drives are OK) and the data is protected via Windows OS drive manager.
Req'd: Duo Core CPU

2nd option built a freeNAS/SAMBA/Openfiler box
each SATA port can have 12TB volume raid5 via 5x drives hardware controller SPM394
This set up is a lower electrical power consumption

Req'd: Atom or lower power CPU

For some reason, I never got a notification of a reply.
Nevertheless, thanks for the reply.

I have both my PCI-E 8/16 lanes occupied by 460 GTX SLI.

Is there a link where your 2nd option is explained more thoroughly?

My rig is an i5-2500K, Asus P8P67 Pro and I am running an SSD as well.

Thank you.

Yes, there is

40TB FreeNAS

This was built with LOW (green) power consumption about 180W at normal run.
When it is in sleep mode the power drops to 45W

You can use either SPM393 or SPM394, where SPM394 has LCD display and SPM393 does not have LCD display

I use WD Green Drives, where everyone mention about TLER problem when raid, there is no problem about a year in services streams Bluray.iso (BD.ISO) image

Thank you for your reply.
I was looking for something simple, and perhaps just a two drive NAS.
