160gb usb connected hard drive not detected by bios

I connected a hitachi 160gb HDD to a new usb cable arrangement and on 2 machines neither bios or windows installation detects it.
When I swap the hdd to a 40gb seagate barracuda BOTH SYSTEMS BIOSES AND WINDOWS DETECT IT WITHOUT A PROBLEM.
I tried using the internal PSU of the PC as power supply instead of the psu supplied and it still won't work.
So its something to do with the Hitachi HDD.
Anyone have a clue?
