Hi,
Bought a cheap Toshiba portage - because the HD was dead. I've replaced the
HD and installed standard WinXP on the HDD from my PC (because I don't have
an external CD for the toshiba yet). I can boot fine from the disc on my PC,
but on the Toshiba it gets to the point in the boot sequence when the line
is filled in completely in white and then hangs the machine.
Am I suffering from lack of the correct drivers? surely the laptop would
boot standard XP? (I don't have the XP tablet edition either - if there is
such a thing). I just have one disc with some tablet files on it.

Are you saying that XP is already installed and then you are transferring
the drive, or that you are putting the basic cabs onto the hdd and then
trying to setup XP from the drive?
