After the disc is placed, nothing comes up when I go into My Computer and double click the drive a dialogue box headed as Window Explorer comes up with: D:\is not accessible, incorrect function. Does anyone know what this is about?

It might be broken. Is this a desktop or laptop? If it is a desktop try a different on if you have a spare. If not order a new one they are cheap like 30 bucks.

It is capable of burning discs and in the past I've used the disc I inserted to do so.

the drive is a Sony DVD+RW DW -Q58a
