Problem with external dvd burner

O.K., so my laptop's dvd drive bit the dust so I bought a USB external one today. When I plugged it in and rebooted, Vista does not see it! At first it saw it for about a minute and was "installing drivers" for it (the bubble at the bottom right told me that) but now it just won't see it. I rebooted a number of times. I can press the button on the drive and it opens properly. I even put in an Ubuntu live disc and rebooted and it saw the disc perfectly and loaded it up and everything. I can see the drive in the BIOS. But windows JUST WONT SEE IT!! Please help. The box clearly says it's compatible with Vista 32-bit and my specs are well above the required ones. It seems like Windows cannot find the correct drivers for it. Your best bet is to download the drivers directly or use the CD that came with it.

Check the device manager for any signs of a problem with the drive(Error codes and such). Also see if disk management has not assigned it a letter or if its trying to share a letter with something else.
