Should I upgrade to a E7400?

I currently hvae an e5300. what are the performance gains?

Not by much. You're better off saving that money and overclocking the E5300. I have one myself and easily OCed it to 3.0GHz (which means it performs nearly equal to the E7400, which is clocked lower but has more cache)
