Hi folks,

My current rig:

E8400
4GB of Ram
4870 512MB

Just upgraded to a 1920 x 1080 display and want to upgrade the gpu along side that to maximize framerates in upcoming games.

Should I drop in another 4870 CF or does the fact that both 4870's would be 512 mean I should upgrade to a single card with 1GB of ram?

Conversely, what would happen if I dropped a 4870 1GB card into CF with a 512 MB card?

Thanks

I think if a 1024MB card is dropped with a a 512, the 1024MB card comes down to 512MB. Though I may be confusing this with Clock speed.

With the recent arrival of the newest generation of cards, you might want to wait some time. The price of cards will drop, and you might find yourself another 4870 for 120$.

*Also, make sure you have a good PSU!

AFAIK the cards will run at their own clockspeeds in CF but the 1Gb card will be cut back to 512Mb to match the other.
Unless you lower some details and keep the AA low or off, the 512Mb cards will struggle at that resolution and although the HD5850 is still quite expensive and in limied supply I think one of those might be your best option.
