What (if any) changes do I have to make to install a 120g hard drive on a hp 5600? I am running xp home, with 1g mem
I believe is's a celeron cpu ( have to check). The max that hp says is available is a 60g. I also would like to upgrade the memory and add a wireless modem. Any info would be appriciated.

Here is the manual: http://www.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00246219.pdf

According to the manual the HDD limit is 60 GBs. However, on another brand of laptop (Dell), They told me that the limit was 240 GBs, but I installed a 320 GB HDD and no problems were experienced. Manufacturers tend to be conservative in their specs. - sometimes this means that in your model, 60 GBs were tested and it worked fine. Remember, 10 years ago, 100 GBs was a huge amount of hard disk space, and 256 MBs of RAM was considered adequate.

I would suggest, try the 120 GB HDD.

For RAM, you are at the limit. This capacity is controlled by the motherboard.
HP Pavilion ze5x00, ze4x00, HP Compaq nx9010, nx9008, nx9005, Compaq Evo N1050v, Compaq Presario 2500, and Compaq Presario 2100:
2 slots for PC2100 DDR-266 SDRAM modules
Up to 1 GB (1024 MB) SDRAM using 512 MB modules.

The wireless capability is also dependent upon the motherboard. However, if you have a PCI card slot, you can use a plug-in wireless card.

Thank you for your response, I'm going to try the 120g as soon as I get the time. I'll let you know the result.
If I update the BIOS (there is a update available, but I have to flash it in) could I increase the memory, we'll never know until we try.
Will back up the old BIOS first!
Speaking of BIOS I have a old CTX 700e laptop with the orginal drivers disk, (and I believe BIOS info, have to check that)
I gave the laptop to my grandson so no telling how long it will last, but if anyone needs these drivers&BIOS let me know.

Yes, please do let us know.

When you flash (update) the BIOS remember to follow the motherboard manufacturer's instructions. And do a complete backup first.

Thank you for the BIOS/drivers offer. They are freely available for download from the manufacturer's website (unless they are no longer in business).
