how do you know if hard drive is faulty

Have Toshiba 5 year old lap
Got problems anyway tried sytem recovery disc ,,,,started ok restarted then nothing
How can i check my hard drive

You need to perform a full surface scan of your drive.

MHDD is one program that can do this:

If you find out the manufacturer of the hard drive in the laptop you can go to their web site and download their diagnostic software.
