C2D to i5

Ok I have a friend that will buy my

E8500
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
Corsair 4GB PC 800
Corsair 620HX
For 360.00

I can buy an i5 setup
I5 mobo combo http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.246586
Ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231279
PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009
For 579.96

That would be 220 more I would have to spend for an i5 setup with a bigger PSU and I would be able to pick up another GTX260 192 core for sli for another 130 bucks.

So for 350 bucks would you make the upgrade? I am thinking it would be a good deal and I would be set for awhile.

Solution
You currently have a fast cpu and adequate graphics.

From there, if you want better gaming in today's games, and if the choice is between more cpu or more graphics at up to 1920, the money is probably better put into graphics.

Go through these tests:

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3634&p=16

You will see a stock E8600 delivering highly playable frame rates when using the SAME video card as the big boys.

In your case, your i5 would have modest graphics, and your OC'd E8500 would have much better graphics. And at 1920, that difference would be even more important.
If you can't SLi on that EP45, then moving to the i5 opens up that option if you need it. Your E8500 is pretty swift at 3.8, but I presume you could do that with an i5.

So for $220 you back yourself out of a little bit of a mobo/psu corner, and earn the right to spend another $130 for a 2nd 260-192 gpu.

Except for bragging rights, not sure I'd bother - you haven't said there's something your rig doesn't do. Your 260 isn't a 216. You can have a greater impact on gaming (if that's your gig) depending on your resolution (you didn't say) by spending the $350 net on a new ATI graphics setup.

Because i could just add another 4870 and be set ?

1. yes i will back myself out of a GPU/PSU coner, Because atm my mobo is xfire and my GPU is Nvidia. <(long story) One of the resons i like this forums is so others dont find them self in the same spot.

2. yes this rig is for gamimg also school work and some Photoshop work the wife does for fun. Rez is 1680x1050 but might upgrade in a few years.

3. So what do you think would be better? (4870s in xfire with a E8500 @ 3.8 DDR2) vs (i5 750 @ 3.8 sli GTX 260s with DDR3) Either way i think i would spend about the same in the end.

Yes i do !!! thanks for the info :)

I guess its one good thing about living in SoCal, i have a frys and micro center about 20 mins away

So i guess maybe just wait to the new GPUs comes out and maybe pick up a 5890 and sell my GTX 260. Oh well i guess you live and learn (I should of went with a 750 PSU and a 4870 to begin with or got the mobo that was 15 bucks less and no xfire :)

Thanks guys
