Access Files from Vista Recovery Command Prompt

I have a friend's HDD with a SMART error reporting 'imminent failure'. Vista fails to 'autorepair' it, and otherwise the OS won't boot, so I cannot access the files, of which there are NO backups...

I created a Vista Recovery CD and booted that, and opened the command prompt, from which I see the directory tree structure and all the files.

I want to be able to somehow copy these files out of the machine to external media. I know that NTBACKUP is meant for tape or whatever, and that it doesn't work with other media (without some kind of add-ons, which I cannot install since the OS is dead)

Is there any way, in this current state, where the HDD clearly is at least partially alive, that I can recover these files?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
